The département de l'Information bibliographique et numérique at the Bibliothèque nationale de France will give a half-day training session on the role of authority files in databases.
Whether a database is bibliographic, iconographic or prosopographical in nature, its structure is based on a set of descriptive elements (author, title, geographic location, etc.) and the relationships between them. Authority files play a vital role in standardising the written form of these different elements and in identifying them accurately.
In a semantic web context, authority files are what makes it possible to link different databases together. The use of unique and permanent identifiers improves the interoperability between the different databanks produced by national libraries, publishers and even research teams (BnF authority files, ABES IdRef, Rameau, VIAF, ISNI, etc.).
Target audience: researchers or anyone who uses or is responsible for the administration of databases
Session aims: understanding the need for authority files in the internal administration of a database and for interoperability with other databases

- principles of data alignment
- examples of how authority files can be used
